Pieces That Remain from The Compendium

✨ What Is The Hero Society?

The Hero Society is a tabletop roleplaying game set in a world on the brink of transformation. Powers once thought lost to myth have returned, not through spells or bloodlines, but through the strange and terrible awakening known as the Surge—a phenomenon that mutates, empowers, and changes those it touches forever.

Players take on the roles of Cradle-Touched, Surge-born, Beast-Bonded, and Aether-marked individuals living in the heart of Nova City, the epicenter of global change.

Here, you'll choose your path: Serve the regime, rebel against it, or transcend it altogether. The Hero Society is:

 ● Narrative-rich: You shape your character’s journey through dynamic choices and consequences.

 ● Mutation-based: Evolution isn’t just a power-up—it’s a story.

 ● Faction-driven: Every group has goals, enemies, and secrets.

 ● Built for drama: Whether you're solo or part of a team, your character’s growth is explosive—sometimes literally.

 ● Playable solo, in groups, or even asynchronously.

Player Hooks Here’s how to connect characters to the world:

 ● You were born during a Surge. Your body never felt "right"—until the Cradle called to you. ● Your sibling vanished during a blackout. No one remembers them but you.

 ● You found a Relic. It whispered your name.

 ● You are hunted by the Realityfather’s regime because of your brand.

 ● You belong to a bloodline tied to flame witches, Surge prophets, or the Deepwake.

Hidden in the Gaps…

There are years missing. Entire districts sealed. People vanished.

Every Surge is rewriting not just the future… but the past.

Some players may uncover lost Surge Psalms, censored prophecy fragments, or Null-Order memory wipes that reveal what truly happened in Year 3. Or Year 4. Or before the Surge even began.

Nova City is no longer the clean-cut metropolis it once was. The Surge reshaped everything—from the slums to the skybridges.

Some zones shimmer with residual Aether or bioluminescent Cradle growths, while others are locked down under Null Order control.

Every district holds secrets. Every alley could be your first mutation… or your last.

Minor & Secret Factions

The Black Siphon – Extract Surge essence to build forbidden tech.

The Crow-Eyed – Ancient seers who predicted the civil war and vanished.

Children of the Forgotten Flame – Those bound to the nursery rhyme book that grows with each witch’s song.

The Virentha – Alien race drawn to Earth's Aether signal, approaching… but not yet arrived.

We Are the Sixth – Underground rebel network marked by graffiti, code, and prophecy.

“You are not what you were born. You are what you become through fire, fracture, and flame.”

Mutation is the language of change in The Hero Society.

When the Surge courses through the land, it doesn’t simply alter biology—it rewrites potential.

From flame-wreathed fists to minds that bend probability, mutation defines the path of power for many characters.

Mutation Trees: How They Work

A Mutation Tree is a structured progression of abilities. Every player with a mutation gains access to a core tree type, with specific abilities that branch as they grow.

 ● Players begin with a Core Mutation during a Surge or upon character creation.

 ● As they gain XP or unlock Surge milestones, they choose from branches tied to their tree type.

 ● Some trees evolve, merge, or awaken hidden paths based on choices, beast bonds, or faction influence.

 Each tree contains:

 ● 3 Core Branches

 ● 1 Rare Evolution Path

 ● 1 Secret Node (discovered only through specific world interaction)

Crafting Relics

Relic crafting is dangerous and rarely standardized. To craft or enhance a relic, players must:

Gather Components:

 ● Surge Shards – found in unstable zones or Cradle vaults.

 ● Null Filaments – extracted from defeated Null Order constructs.

 ● Beast Organs – from Surge-mutated fauna.

 ● Ancient Blueprints – deciphered from ruins, coded books, or dreams.

Crafting Rules (Optional Mechanics):

 ● Roll Intelligence (Tinker) or Wisdom (Mystic Smithing).

 ● DC based on Relic level: ○ Low-Tech: DC 10–12 ○ Mid-Tech: DC 14–16 ○ High-Tech: DC 18+

 ● Failure may create a Cursed Relic or cause a Relic Surge (wild magical tech explosion).

 ● Adding a Surge Core (optional) can awaken sentience.

Player & GM Notes

● Relics are living artifacts. They may grow, resist, or even speak.

 ● Some mutation trees evolve based on relic bonding.

 ● The Cradle Defectors and Realityfather loyalists both seek relics for world-altering purposes.

 ● Players may accidentally craft Relics That Should Not Be, tying themselves to greater cosmic powers.

In the world of The Hero Society, some Cradle Surges awaken more than mutations in humans—they stir the instincts of nearby fauna, transforming them into Cradle-Beasts capable of forging lasting bonds with mutated individuals.

A Bonded Companion is not just a pet—it is a mirror of the player’s power, evolving alongside them, sharing in their strengths, weaknesses, and sometimes even their fate.

What Is Aether Magic?

Aether is primordial energy—the opposite and equal rival to the Cradle’s mutation-based power.

Where the Cradle warps biology, the Aether bends reality, time, and thought. It is the magic of will made manifest, drawn from a source outside the known world.

Before the First Surge, before even the Cradle’s awakening, Aether-wielders walked among the stars.

Now, Aether magic is forbidden—a threat to The Cradle’s control, and a temptation to those who wish to unbind themselves from mutation.

{There seems to be more written but it is hard to make out due to having been burnt to keep it from falling into the wrong hands. This book contains secrets that only the Aethertouched and Aetherblood could understand fully. For others, it will look like meaningless words on a page, for you... Magic and Memory come alive.

If you are reading this, it means you are one of us. You are no longer lost in the Void, waiting for a sign.

Your time is now, let us brighten your horizon with dreams of a better future as we learn how to make tomorrow happen today. Now is the time to claim your powers, your ancient birthright, the things that make you human.

Spread the word, tell others who might be one of us. They might find their home between the words said amongst people who care and believe that anything is possible, if we work together...

... even magic.}
